Evaluation of Music Video (Unit 29)

Evaluation of Music Video
The task I was set was to create a music video that I only should compete. The task was specific, I would have to pick a music video and I would have to decide if I should star in it or another friend to play the artist in my music video.  After a few days I finished filming the footage, me and the class went into the mac room to start the editing of it.
I have learnt that there are a lot of music video to choose from and it’s difficult to choose one specific genre, I decided to choose Folk/Rock because it’s not so hard but I didn’t realise that the music video I chose was long and it’s started becoming difficult but I pulled though at the end. There are a lot of different genres such as Pop and Rap, this song I chose was a bit of everything I have mentioned, some scenes are classic rock but most bits are rap but sang in the pop manor. Also I have learnt that a specific genre can also represent a specific location. Someone that my music video can relate to is Ed Sheeran, he has a similar idea to music videos like me but he manly sets his music videos in dark colours and also in black and white. His locations are always in the street and/or he uses normal people the audience can/could relate to, Ed Sheeran has a music video that is only set on the road, apartment room or park, these locations are everyday locations that any person could have visited and/or visit this very day.
Most of the ideas for my music video came from watching other artist’s music video, such as Ed Sheeran’s ‘A Team’. For example, I chose to use everyday locations and my specific clothing. After all the decisions have been analysed, I started filming and went out with my filming crew (Isaac) and my guitarist (Onur) to Epping Forest.
Before everything such as filming I had to choose a song so I was researching of different artist, the first artist that came to mind was Ed Sheeran but I still had doubts. I began researching Ed Sheeran though Wikipedia and all this past and songs came up and only one song stood out for me ‘Trakor’, this song isn’t that popular to Ed Sheeran’s audience because it was created by another artist Wretch 32 and even though they are friends, Ed Sheeran’s fans don’t fancy it so much, but before the audience had their view on the song, Ed Sheeran created the cover of it and the pace of song was slowed down and was sung in a Rocky pop way so the audience began liking it and now it’s really popular but it was hard to find. There was another song by Ed Sheeran I liked that was called ‘This’ but I liked ‘Trakor’ more.  ‘Trakor’ has no music so I firstly had no ideas to use so I started thinking more creatively and began have more ideas then I should.
There were more generic conventions I was following such as Locations and Characters etc. The ideas part of this was easy because I began thinking about some ideas that are impossible in my circumstance because they were out of my budget (My budget was only my Oyster card and £5) so I dropped some ideas and went with cheaper suggestions by my crew.  I also had to create a storyboard of my ideas but after all that, it didn’t turn out that same as what I thought it was going to be.  I really wanted my music video to be performance based and I believe I achieved that

Storyboard (Unit 1)

Editing (Unit 1)

Music Video:                       Traktor
Artist:                                  Adrian Hoxhaj
Director:                              Adrian Hoxhaj

Through watching and analysing the music video “You Need Me, I Don't Need You” by Ed Sheeran, I have decided to include the Straight cut editing technique because it allowed the audience to see ever angle of the artist and it also looks awesome to watch. The reason Straight cuts are so effective is because they are interesting and can blend two different scenes together in an entertaining way.
Straight cuts have a way of drawing songs together and this allows the artist to represent a message to the audience. For example within “You Need Me, I Don't Need You”, Ed Sheeran uses straight cuts to scenes that have people doing something, this would allow the audience to see different parts of entertainment and also scenes that go well with the lyrics he is singing.
The straight cuts help to reflect the narrative of the song, the reason for this is the music video doesn’t show Ed Sheeran until the very end but it does cut into scenes that relate to the lyrics and the flow of the beat.
Straight cuts also help build relationship with the audience. Straight cuts allow the music video to change around from scene to scene and this could draw in the target audience or even more audience from the UK public.
Ed Sheeran is considered to be ‘Folk/Rock’, so that could be a reason why every change of scene was a straight cut but a lot of genres have specific cut, the reason it’s popular in the music videos is because it makes a music video make sense.

Camera (Unit 1)

Music Video: Ed Sheeran – Traktor

Artist: The original artist is Wretch 32 but it was covered by Ed Sheeran and that’s why I chosen to make this music video because it can reflect to everyone.

Director: Adrian Hoxhaj.

Camera shots are very essential to a music video because they can allow a person to build their own ideas of what the music video is about. In songs that have the same style as mine, the director would use a lot of different camera shots because they allow the audience to create their own ideas about this music video. The main shot this music video contains is medium shot, this is because medium shots can show the real aspect of music videos, for example within Rizzle Kicks “When I was a youngster”, the audience see a lot of medium shots used, this allowed the audience to understand the scenes.

Long shots were also used to show the artist and the guitar player in some scenes.

Medium shots were used essential to show the artist singing and his emotions throughout the music video.

Close up were used to allow the audience to see and understand the artist’s facial expressions, this would allow the audience to feel closer to the artist.

The reason I’ve chosen these specific camera shot is because they all have an important value to my music video, they all allow the audience to see the artist’s emotions and facial expression. I believe this music video reflects a message from the artist because it’s a slow emotional song, this would allow the song to speak out to my target audience and build a relationship with them. Every camera shot reflects the narrative of my song and also all the camera shots show a different aspect of this music video. Also i believe that these camera shots will help my audience to build a relationship with my artist and this is something that other successful music videos do and this is something that i would like to achieve too.

Costum (Unit 1)

For my first costume I have chosen a normal Ralph Lauran shirt and a River Island cardigan. I’ve chosen that shirt because I’m hoping my target audience can respect that expressing style in my custom design. Also the reason I’ve chosen the River island cardigan is because it’s really up to date to the style these days. The colours of the shirt are white and black because I feel that the colours allow the audience to feel emotions of pity for the artist due to the colours being dull. Also the colour of the cardigan is multi- coloured because again it’s up to date and it’s the latest style. That’s the end of the upper body clothes now I’m going to start talking about the lower part of my body. The trouser I’ve chosen is normal bright yellow coloured chinos because they are up to date and can be considered to be “Sexy” to girls. Also I’ve chosen blue vans (Shoes) again there up to date.

Music Labels (Unit 3)

Music Labels
Major Music Labels: since 2009 (Big Four)
1.            Sony Music Entertainment
2.            EMI Group
3.            Warner Music Group
4.            Universal Music Group
The music industry is structured by a 4 major companies Sony Music Entertainment, EMI Group, Warner Music Group, Universal Music Group. These companies also own lots of smaller sub-labels, for example Columbia Records, Epic Records, RCA Records. Also there are independent labels that are not owned by any of the Major record labels, for example Label Love. The purpose of a music company is to find a new talent and to make them as good as they can be, also because there are a lot of music companies, they all need to have popularity to earn the right to take control and own a specific artist.
The reason Sony Music Entertainment has created small sub-label companies is because they are try to entertain a small group of the world’s public. Every town has their own music labels to find or share out new talent, this is because one BIG major company can’t keep track of every little town in the world so the smaller record companies get involved.
Sony Music Entertainment is one of the biggest record labellers in the world, this is because they entertain a vast number of the human public. Examples of the talent they have managed is Beyoncé, Christina Aguilera and Alicia Keys.
Sony Music Entertainment covers every genre that is known. Plus the sub-labels get involved with the finding of some artist so a specific genre, for example Sony Music UK signed Alexandra Burke, Leona Lewis and Little Mix, these artists are mainly R’n’B/Rap.
Sub-labels are controlled by a major for example Sony Music UK are controlled by Sony Music Entertainment. They may have more financial input put into the label because they are funded by a major label. Therefor they have more money to promote their artists and bigger budgets to launch new artists. Independent companies may find it harder to promote an artist because the sub-labels have the financial backing of the majors.
They may have less money to spend on launching an artist. The artists may be less known with only a few making it big in the popular music chart, such as ‘Karmin’ they are a group of a couple that were found from Youtube but now their signed by Epic records (A Sony Music Entertainment Poducation). The artists tend to be seen as less manufactured and focus more on music than image. The fans respect the independent labels because they are seen to be more musically credible than artists signed to major labels.

Target Audience (Unit 3)

Target audience

Target audience is important because it allows for example an artist to create a song suited to their chosen target audience. Every artist has a target audience in mind when creating a song, even more so when creating a music video. If an artist did not have a target audience then their songs and music videos would be meaningless, this is because the song would not relate to anyone nor would it carry a meaning behind it therefore the notion of creating the music video or a song for that matter is utterly useless.

The audience category I have chosen is category E because I would like to aim my music video to young people around 15 to 26, most of the people in this age group are students who have dreams and aspirations that they would like to achieve in their lives or people that have nothing better to do on that day.
The artist I have chosen is Ed Sheeran the reason I have chosen this artist is because he is young and new hence being able to connect with a younger audience. Also he worked very hard to gain the attention of major labels; I feel that their determination can rub off on young students or up and coming bands. From his songs I have decided to use the song ‘Traktor’ because the lyrics are very clear and performance based therefore a hard but good for me to create. This video will interest a young audience, also I able to add things that interest me and can entertain a vast number of the British nation. ‘Traktor’ is a cover from Wretch 32.

Lyric Annalasis (Unit 1)

The mirror can't look me in the eyes, no way
I float like a ribbon in the sky, no plane

My girl's pissed and my daughters on the way
I went clubbin' till my world was revolving
Pretty women and alcohol eh, eh, eh

Choo choo! go hard, go faster, stack p's everyday, hay

I ride this motherfucking beat like a plane
Zoom zoom! down the rabbit hole
More women more alcohol, eh

I'm living my life cause that's what I do best
These girls in my bank want to show me interest
Eh look, pounds or pennies I don't scrounge off any
I am fly, I am not an insect
And I'm the life of the party
Came with Ken but I left with his Barbie

She can ride in the car seat
If she's an angel, I'm Charlie, aw please

My lifestyle's terribly wild
But you'll never catch me on Jeremy Kyle show
Explosive, terrorist style
Don't think Imma blow and get therapy now, hey

Cause I'm in the zone
And I'm trying my hardest not to fall,
And I'm so gone
Oh, I'm so gone…….. Hey

Hmm………

Blue is the Drama Room
Green is Lake Side (Brimsdown)
Red is a Park Bench
Purple is a Club

I consider these lyrics to be a very folk based genre, I believe this because all the songs that Ed Sheeran makes are pretty similar but they always have different messages. All my lyrics will be set in different place because they have to attract more people and also one of my planning is to choose one specific location where my video is manly set such as the bench or lake.

Pie Chart (Unit 3)

I created my questionnaire to find out what it was my target audience liked to listen to, what artists they preferred, what music TV channels they watched and what kind of music video they preferred from a narrative based video to a performance based video. Due to having an idea as to what my target audience prefer from a music video I am able to create a music video that will meet their preferences therefore inclining my audience to watch my music video. I allowed twenty people from my target audience to fill in my questionnaire because I felt that having twenty people would be sufficient enough for me to get an idea of what my target audience preferred form a music video. Examples of the questions I asked my target audience are Do you have a favourite artist?', 'What's your favourite music channel?' and 'what genre of music do you like?’ By asking questions such as these I am able to gain an understanding to what my target audience would like to see from a music video, hence I am able to create my music video to their preferences for example when asked 'Do you prefer??' the majority answered 'Narrative' therefore I will use the song 'Traktor' by Ed Sheeran.
