Iconography (Unit 1)

Iconography
Iconography is very important because it shows the items that are needed in a music video, this is important because the items could be important to make the music video seem more authentic and entertaining. Iconography has a great meaning because it can convey to the audience, for example the guitar the artist will be playing is important because it shows the slow light rock feel the singer is in.
The guitar is important because it shows the slow light rock feel the singer is in, this is important because it shows the narrative and the performance.
I’m sure the guitar will benefit my production because the music video will be in a sad mood so the guitar can make it obvious to the audience.
The guitar will build a relationship with the audience because I believe a guitar is a very romantic item, it’s been used by many other artists like “The Hoosiers”.
An acoustic guitar is the item for romance, this is because it plays a light, slow sound, so I’m sure the audience will realise the romantic feel to the music video. Also the style is narrative and performance so an acoustic guitar is ideal.

Locations (Unit 1)

The locations to a music video is a main priority to a music video because it can relate to the lyrics and it can make the music video seem more entertaining.
Black, Dark room with one light shun
Royal park of London (the edge of the river)
Royal park of London (near at tree at the end)
The reason I have chosen these location is because they have a romantic edge. For example, the dark room is to show the heart break the singer will be in because he and his girlfriend broke up. The edge of the river in royal park of London is to show the happiness the singer would have been in, and finally, the reason I’ve chosen a scene near a tree in royal park of London is because that will show the connection the singer and his girlfriend had.
The song relates to the artist emotions because in the music video he has just broken up with the love of his life so he doesn’t know what to do. I chose 2 romantic locations to show he’s excitement for this relationship but then the scene normally changes to an all dark room because he just wants to kill himself with the emotion around his body. The lyrics are all in a sad mood.
2 of the 3 location are noticeable because they are both in the royal park of London so some people have seen it in really life but my first scene is in a dark so no one would know where and when the scene would have been set in.
The song is very conventional to my music genre because it can relate to the audience and the lyrics all match with the same flow.
Most of Ed Sheerans music videos are in black and white, this is because he likes to show the emotional side of music, this is why he’s so now by the nation for his English folk and the beauty of locations. He’s also well known for his extras and the customs.

Mise-en-scene (Unit 29)

Game ft. Chris Brown - Pot of Gold

The music video 'Pot of Gold' by Chris Brown and The Game is set in three different places one is a room in which we see The Game and a child which we presume to be his son. In the music video we only see The Game in the room with the child for a couple of seconds and he begins to raps. The costumes worn are not anything that is out of the ordinary they wear normal clothing. I think that the reason for them having normal clothing is because they rap about their lives and how they feel about their lives therefore having normal clothing on enforcers how they feel that what they rap about is normal and the truth. In the music video The Game is throwing a basketball up and down and playing with his son the basketball is iconic in the music video because basketball is a massive part in The Games life as he talks about it a lot therefore making the basketball iconic. The lighting in the room is low key resulting in the mood becoming serious this could mean that The Game is encouraging his audience to understand how he feels about having a child during this The Games body language is relaxed and calm this would allow his audience feel the same as him due to his lyrics adding to his body language gives his audience a perspective of who he is and his ideals. Another setting in the music video is the ghetto which again revolves around The Game. This part of the music video is high key thus it is natural and bright during this we see The Game around allot of people which we presume to be The Games friends, in this part of the video there is not anything iconic but stereotypical of a ghetto and what a black American does during the day, this is hanging around people almost gangster like with people doing weights this is what the media and film portray a ghetto as. I think that this represents The Games life and what he grew up around. When the setting changes and The Game comes in to it his body language changes as he goes from a be loving father to an authoritative character.  Finally in the music video the only time we hear or see Chris brown it at the third and final setting which is a studio in which he sings this setting is constantly seen throughout the video in this we only see a mid-shot of Chris Brown and The Game in the studio this setting allows the audience to understand the meaning behind his music video which is where he was and were he is now.

Audience categories (Unit 3)

A
Top management, bankers, lawyers, doctors and other professionals
B
Middle management, teachers, many 'creative' e.g. graphic designers etc.
C1
Office supervisors, junior managers, nurses, specialist clerical staff etc.
C2
Skilled workers, tradespersons (white collar)
D
Semi-skilled and unskilled manual workers (blue collar)
E
Unemployed, students, pensioners, casual workers

A  = Top management, bankers, lawyers, doctors and other professionals.
An audience who go under the category A are usually Bankers and Lawyers they listen to songs such as Classical music because they are usually people who need to calm down and relax. Therefore they will watch music channels such as MTV Classical.

B  = Middle management, teachers, many 'creative Jobs' e.g. graphic designers.
An audience who go under category B are people who have creative jobs such as acting, graphic designing and game designing. These are usually people aged 20 to 30 this means they are still young therefore will listen to music on channels such as Kiss TV.
C1 = Office supervisors, junior managers, nurses, specialist clerical staff.
An audience who go under category C1 are people who work in an office or as nurses. They are usually around 35 to 50 this means they are pretty old meaning they probably listen to songs that aren’t that resent like old Michael Jackson songs but also some resent songs. They will watch music channels such as VH1 because the channel features a mixture of music videos.

C2 = Skilled workers, tradespersons (white collar)
An audience who go under C2 are very similar to the category C1 because they both have similar jobs this means that they also like a mixture of music and would watch the VH1 channel.

People in category E are all different for example students are likely to watch TV channels such as MTV and VH1 however a pensioner is likely to be around 60 to 80 years of age therefore will watch TV channels such as classical TV due the era they grew up in, for example they will listen to songs from the 60s or 80s because that was the era in which they grew up and were they watched their favourite music videos which are known as classics today.

Artist Identify/Profile (Unit 3)

Artist Identify/Profile

I will be writing about Ed Sheeran, Ed Sheeran is a well-known English folk rock singer.  Ed was signed by Asylum/Atlantic Records on 8 January 2011. Before he was signed, Ed put on a free show to fans at the Barfly in Camden. Ed had over 1,000 fans that turned up to see the show, so Ed ended up playing four different shows to make sure everyone saw a gig, including a gig outside on the street after the venue had closed. Later that month, Ed was signed to Asylum / Atlantic Records. Also Ed released his final independent EP, No.5 Collaborations Project featuring appearances by grime artists including Wiley, JME, Devlin, Sway and Ghetts. With this EP, Ed gained mainstream attention for reaching number 2 in the iTunes chart without any promotion or label, selling over 7,000 copies in its first week. Ed has been working at this label for the last 10 months, releasing more songs.
On 26 April, Ed appeared on the TV music show Later... with Jools Holland, where he performed one of his songs "The A Team". Six weeks later "The A Team" was released as a digital download in the United Kingdom. "The A Team" entered the UK chart at number 3, selling over 58,000 copies in the first week.

The style of the music video is narrative, this is because we the audience see a female character moving and continuing with her life whilst Ed Sheeran is singing. The purpose of this music video is to show the life of people that don’t have a home to go back to. The target audience to this music video is for 2 different target groups, the first one is for teenagers because they always want new and more expensive items. Secondly are for high class people, because it’s interesting to them because some high classed people don’t care about the lower classes. The artist values and believes in this music video is to imply that no human can be look down to, but I don’t know why Ed Sheeran chose to call this music video “A Team”. We the audience don’t notice the artist’s image in this music because we only get a glimpses of him.
Three point that show Goodwin’s conventions are, Generic Characteristics, What is the relationship between lyrics and visuals and is it performance based, narrative based or concept based? How much of each. Firstly the generic characteristics with this music video is that there are a lot of different characteristics within this music video, for example the lighting and the costumes. Now I’ll explain the examples, the background and lighting were all in low key and the costumes were in black in white and stylish this makes the song folk. The relationship between lyrics and visuals are considered strong because Ed Sheeran is singing about the life of a helpless homeless girl and I believe it’s helping them with people to understand her situation. Finally I will be talking about if this music video is performance based, narrative based or concept based and how much of each. I believe this music video is all narrative based because its set in London roads and the lighting is black & White and low key.

The style of the music video is performance, this is because we the audience see a male character miming the lyrics to Ed Shreeran music video “You need me, I don’t need you”. The purpose of this music video is to mime the lyrics to deaf because it’s considered to be harder for them to look up the lyrics. The target audience to this music video is for 2 different target groups, the first one is for teenagers because they are at the time of hating people and the moody emotion. Secondly is for deaf people, because it’s interesting to them because it’s easy for them to understand the music video. The artist values and believes in this music video is to imply that no human can look down to deaf people, that’s why Ed Sheeran chose to call this song “You need me, I don’t need you”. We the audience don’t notice the artist’s image in this music because we only get a gimps of him at the end.

Three point that show Goodwin’s conventions are, Generic Characteristics, What is the relationship between lyrics and visuals and is it performance based, narrative based or concept based? How much of each. Firstly the generic characteristics with this music video is that there are a lot of different characteristics within this music video, for example the dancers, background, lighting and the costumes. Now I’ll explain the examples, the different types of dancing made it seem folk, the background and lighting were all in low key and the costumes were in black in white and stylish. The relationship between lyrics and visuals are considered strong because Ed Sheeran is singing about the determination of deaf people and the I believe it’s helping them with effort of learning how to sign. Finally I will be talking about if this music video is performance based, narrative based or concept based and how much of each. I believe this music video is mainly performance based because its set in a stage and the lighting is low key and low key.

The style of the music video is narrative, this is because we the audience see a male character moving that we the audience assume its Ed Sheeran but then we see its Rupert Grint but he’s got a voice over and that’s Ed Sheeran singing. The purpose of this music video is to show his life and a fans dream and obsession. The target audience to this music video is for teens between the ages of 14 to 19. The artist values and believes in this music video is to imply that some people need an obsession to archive their dreams, but I don’t know why Ed Sheeran chose to call this music video “Lego house” maybe it’s because it shows Rupert Grint playing with Lego blocks. We the audience don’t notice the artist’s image in this music because we only get to see him at the end.
Three point that show Goodwin’s conventions are, Generic Characteristics, What is the relationship between lyrics and visuals and is it performance based, narrative based or concept based? How much of each. Firstly the generic characteristics with this music video are that there are a lot of different characteristics within this music video, for example the Lego and the costumes. Now I’ll explain the examples, the background and lighting were all in low key and the costumes were normal coloured but Rupert is wearing similar clothes to Ed. The relationship between lyrics and visuals are considered strong because Ed Sheeran is singing about his life in someone’s life. Finally I will be talking about if this music video is performance based, narrative based or concept based and how much of each. I believe this music video is all narrative based because its set in different location but its talking about his life.

Music Channels (Unit 3)

MTV Base is a very popular music channel it is known worldwide and is aired in many      countries. Therefore the channel has a big audience and is seen as one of the best music channels around today. The target audience of MTV is teenagers around 13 to adults aged 30 the reason for this is because MTV has a street/ Hip Hop culture and many people born around the mid-80s and over will enjoy gangster rap and Hip Hop because they have grown up around rap/ Hip Hop culture therefore will watch the channel. MTV has many different channels for example MTV rock, MTV classic, and MTV dance these all have their own type of music as the names suggest for example MTV rock will undoubtedly contain rock music. Artists that are featured on the TV channel MTV Base are Rick Ross, Drake, J Cole, Jay Z and The Game. Artists such as J Cole and Jay Z are featured on the channel because they talk about past and present experiences that an audience that watch MTV Base can relate to for example in his song ‘Lost Ones’  J Cole Raps about how he left a woman pregnant but did not know what to do about it. In playing emotional songs the channel is able to attract the audience. MTV is known by everyone in the UK, I know this because the logo is appealing to everyone and it can mean different genres to different people. MTV was introduced to the UK in 1 July 1997.

4 Music is one of the biggest music channels in the UK. The target audience for the channel is similar to MTV’s which are teenagers aged 13 to adults who are 30 the reason being is that the channel shows many resent songs which appeal to the age group. 4 Music has music such as Rap, Hip Hop and RnB the reason for the channel having such genre of songs is because the channel is able to get more views because this music channel gives more verity for their young listeners. Therefore showing music videos that will appeal to a younger audience will increase the popularity of the TV channel. Artists that are featured on the TV channel are Rihanna, Kelly Rowland, Nelly and Busta Rhymes these artists are regularly featured on a regular bases because they all have one thing and that is they all have upbeat and a catchy tune therefore having the artists on the channel will interest an audience also will pull in an audience resulting in more views. The channel also has many other channels such as channel four, channel 4+1, and film four this then gives the audience a wider range of channels to watch. The 4 Music logo sells the TV channel because the colours are bold and intriguing this means that it is eye catchy thus selling the brand and the TV channel.

VH1 has a target audience ranged 16 to 35 this is because not only does the channel play up to date and recent music it also has the latest gossip which would usually attract a female audience. The TV channel also has sponsors such as MTV who are one of the most well-known music channels around the world increasing the endorsement of the channel. The target audience are usually young people who like to be up to date on the latest news in the music industry. Also the channel appeals to an audience because the channel features a big variety of music for example RnB, Pop, Rock and Dance music the reason for such a variety of music is to attract a wide audience. The channel also uses artists to gain attention from an audience examples are Nickleback, Michael Jackson, Kelly Clarkson, Pink and Lupe Fiasco all five artists sell the channel because they represent it once they are seen on the channel they will be remembered that way therefore when an audience would like to see one of their songs they will know that VH1 is the channel that they can turn to and watch the music video. Vh1 is known in the UK but not a great deal then the others, I know this because the logo is appealing to only some people and it can mean different genres to different people. Vh1 was introduced to the UK in January 1, 1985.An attracting part of the TV channel is the logo this is because it is bold and has colours such as pink, green, blue and yellow having these are eye catching and attractive this therefore will appeal to an audience.

Codes and Conventions of 3 different music genres (3/3) (Unit 29)

Title: Olly Murs - Heart Skips a Beat ft. Rizzle Kicks
Genre: Pop Rap
Camera Shots: Mid Shot was used to show the power of the colours around them.
Lighting: Low key was used to make Olly Murs seem larger and more powerful than normal.
Colour: Bright colours were used because the song is meant to represent summer.
Mise-en-Scene: There were no examples of items within this music video.
Editing: Slow Motion was used when the kid is skating on the skate park.
Camera Movements: Zoom in was used when Olly Murs was singing, this was used to show the happiness on his facial expressions.
The reason is chose this music video is because it allows the audience to feel the happiness Olly Murs is having. I will be talking about the editing used, within this music video there were a lot of different type of editing but I will be talking about the skateboarder, still the music video is trying to show the summer feel. Now I’ll talk about the Camera Movements used, the one I’ll be talking about is the zoom in motion, this was used to show the happiness on Olly Murs facial expression.

Codes and Conventions of 3 different music genres (2/3) (Unit 29)

Title: Will Young - Jealousy
Genre: Pop
Camera Shots: Close up was used to show the jealousy within he’s eye.
Lighting: Low Key was used to make him seem more powerful than normal.
Colour: Dull colours were used to show the anger in his face expressions.
Mise-en-Scene: Leotard was worn throughout the music video.
Editing: Slow Motion was used when the other guy caches the female on his hips, this was useful because it shows his feelings for her.
Camera Movements: zoom in was used to show the two extra’s feelings towards each other.
The reason is chose this music video is because it’s strong and very emotional. This music video is very effective because it allows the audience to create their own ideas of who is will Young singing about. There were a lot of different types of camera shots that were used in this music video, the reason is chose this one is because it can speak to the audience and can create an emotional link towards the singer and also it allows the audience to see the jealousy within his eyes. Now I will talk about the colours used within Will Young’s music video, there were a lot of examples of dark colours within this video, main the colours were dull because it’s trying to show the anger within Will Young’s face.

Codes and Conventions of 3 different music genres (1/3) (Unit 29)

Title: LMFAO – Champagne Showers.
Genre: Dance.
Camera Shots: Mid Shot was used to show the excitement within the 2 LMFAO Crew.
Lighting: Low Key was used to make the 2 LMFAO Crew to seem lager than normal.
Colour: A lot of bright colours were used with “Campaign Showers” this is effective because it represents the party feeling of their music.
Mise-en-Scene: Campaign bottles, this was used because the song is all about Campaigns.
Editing: a slow motion edit was used when the 2 LMFAO crew jump, this was used to show emphasise of the excitement within them.
Camera Movements: zoom out was used as soon as the song started, this was used because the music video is trying to show how many people were at the party.
The reason I chose this music video is because it has a lot to talk about and it’s different to other genres. This music video was very powerful because its shows the audience the fun way of life. There were all different types of camera shots but I chose the mid shot because it was the most effective one. Also there were so many different examples of lighting but the low key was the most effective because it made them seem greater and the flow was increased so more chance of dancing.

Editing Styles (Unit 29)

Labrinth - Earthquake ft. Tinie Tempah

Editing is often used to show the audience the tension within a film, there are three different types of editing used in this scene. One example of editing is Fast Pace Editing. Fast Pace Editing was used when Labrinth was singing but the scene continued to change within a 4 second time barrier from a deserted warehouse to a spaced out squared walled room. The Fast Edit was used to engage the audience to the dance and the vocals made my Labrinth. In this music video, Labrinth is trying to make the audience think that he’s the person making all the noise within the music video. Cross cuts were used a lot throughout the music video, my example of a Cross cut was when Labrinth jumped on the wall and when he landed the location change. Then the whole music video calms down when the scene changes to a group of Labrinth, this is an example of a Change of Pace Edit, this was used to prepare the audience to the entrance of Tinie Tempah so its slow because we the audience now he’s coming but we don’t know in what scene.
Camera shots are often used to show the audience the different angles of the scene, there is two different examples of Camera shot were used in this scene. The first example was a Jump cut when Labrinth is singing and we the audience see a slow motion edit of Labrinth waving his arms. This was used to allow the scene to move between from the performance and to allow the narrative to change.  Another example of Camera Shots is a Straight Cut, this was used when Labrinth was singing but the scene is simply changing the angles and nothing else. This was used not to confuse the audience with the change of scene because he’s still wearing the same clothes and the music is still being played.

Camera Shots (Unit 29)

Chris Brown - Next To You ft. Justin Bieber

I will be anayising the different camrea angles within “Chris Brown - Next To You ft. Justin Bieber.” A low angle shot was used when we see Chris Brown in the middle of the center of the town, a low angle shot was used to make Chris Brown seem taller and stronger the he really is. Also a over the shoulder show was used when Justin Bieber was on top of a high building pointing up towards the sky, this was used to make the audience think that Justin Bieber was singing to the people within this bad period of time (Earthquake on earth and everyone is running all over the place). Then we the audience see an extreme long shot of Chris Brown and Justin Bieber in the middle of the town walking in-sink towards the camrea, this was used to make them seem strong and fearlessness .

What is a music video? (Unit 29)

Jason Derulo - Don't Wanna Go Home

Synthpop (Also known as Electropop) – this music video is considered to be synthpop, the reason I know “Don’t want to go home” is considered to be this specific genre is because it shows a lot of example of Electropop throughout the music video, one example used is lighting. Dance-pop – This music video is also considered to be Dance-pop, the reason for this is because of the tune and there’s dancing throughout the music video.
Don’t want to go home is an example on Performance/Narrative.  The reason it’s considered to be Performace/ Narrative based this is because it has a performance to entertain the audience and its narrative, this is because Jason Derulo is trying to tell the audience what he’s been up to, this is because it can relate to the mood of the music video and song,
I believe this music video can be considered to be a narrative video this is because Jason Derulo is singing about his party life style and also the music video is considered to be realistic, I know this because the music video has no fictional scenes, it’s just him sing whilst the back ground performers are drunk. The target audience to this music video are people from the ages of 14 to 22, this is because the song is got a slow beat and the feel of the song has as a reggae vide, but it’s also has a sexual feeling without the actual “Sexual” scenes. This music video can build a relationship with the singer’s lyrics, Jason Derulo is singing about one party which he met a girl and that he doesn’t want to leave.
Goodwins theory was also used in this music video, the reason for this is it shows a lot of close ups, this is because it wants to build a relationship with its audience and the director wants to entertain. Also the audience see a lot of Jason’s face, this can also bring in more audience, this is because young girls could begin having a crush and this could resort them to buy more merchandise.
